kale blooms

There have been two days of sunshine in the last fortnight. The rain is refusing to leave - the ground is soggy, the leaves all squelchy and the bright lush green of moss can be seen growing on most things - including the trunk of the tree outside our dining room window.

Daniel and I celebrated our four-year anniversary on the weekend and we ventured out to beautiful Pearl Beach to have dinner here. I'm not sure if I'm uncivilised by thinking/saying this but what ever happened to good old simple food - cooked well and with love (there was a glossary at the back of the menu - goodness gracious). I ordered a roast lamb with vegetables and when I'd finished it I was quite convinced I could cook better roast vegies than what I was given. I hate that. I hate that you go to dinner, spend a small fortune, get interrupted by waitresses (I counted 12 times!?) and end up completely unsatisfied. Needless to say it was nice to spend the evening with my love and the organic eggs on pumpkin bread toast the following night made up for the roast. Now that says it all.

We were given a gorgeous card from my mum (she bought it three years ago and was saving it for the perfect occasion) and kale blooms from Daniel's mum. Macro photography is made so much easier by a little tripod with bendy legs - I adore the detail in these flowers - the veins, jagged edges and gentle folds. I'm all for detail at the moment. Beauty in the little things.

  2. Happy anniversary! Beautiful flowers.

I hate pretentious fine dining. Chris hates is even more!

Glad to hear you made up for it the following night. x

  3. Happy anniversary. I've never eaten there, but have heard people rave. I'm like you though, if I can make it at home and enjoy it just as much, or more, what's the point. I can recommend the lentil burger at Oasis at Erina Fair, of all places. I crave it. Honest. I can also recommend Popina, at East Gosford. Mid-range pricing, but beautiful fare. Not many vegetarian options, but always something that takes my fancy - and I do eat chicken and fish, but usually opt vegetarian when eating out.

  4. Happy Anniversary! And I totally agree with you on the spending a small fortune and leaving convinced that you could have done it better yourself... small price to pay for a night out with your love. Love the photos (and your small space here, I've been visiting for a while and have yet to introduce myself. Thank you for sharing bits of your life here, I enjoy the daily visit).

  5. Happy Anniversary you two! So sweet! I haven't ventured to that establishment in all the years I've lived here, it just seems a bit too serious for us! The patonga pub is where we usually end up, great food, atmosphere and view! Oh, and the waitresses leave you alone! xx

  8. I totally understand the appeal of simple food comment. The thought crossed my mind while watching master chef the other night when someone was poo pooed for presenting something that loooked old fashioned. I thought boy we have got it all wrong these days. Bring back comfort food cooked with love & the best ingredients... I am always left wanting when I'm served up a dish that looks like it could sit on a gallery wall... Presentation is important to me but not if that is all it has going for it. We all need to feed the soul!!
